What is repointing and when is it required?

A lot of buildings, modern or old, are built with bricks or stone. Mortar is used in between to bond the bricks and stone together. Using mortar in this way can help protect buildings from the effects of weather and the environment. Mortar is more absorbent than other materials, so it helps to draw water away from the bricks, ensuring the wall lasts much longer.

As the mortar is used like this, it tends to wear down faster, and needs occasional maintenance to ensure that the wall lasts as long as possible. This occasional repointing maintenance can be provided by our Torquay based team, and is much cheaper than having to rebuild the wall in the future due to damage from the elements. To find out if your mortar needs repointing, check to see if any cracks or crumbling is present.

Our repointing process

Our Torquay repointing based will begin by removing all of the old mortar from your wall without affecting the brickwork surrounding it. The area that requires repairs can then be raked out ready for us to work on it. Before we begin repointing the wall, this is a great time for us to replace any damaged bricks or stone. The mortar that we use consists of a 4:1 mix of sand and cement, allowing us to ensure a smooth and neat finish. We don’t only provide maintenance for existing walls, we can also provide pointing services for new builds all over the south West.
